Summer is a ton of fun. It’s time for vacations, time off from work, get-togethers with friends, and endless long nights. But it also brings in a blast of warmer air that can be felt just about everywhere. Even in mild climates, the summer can sometimes become unbearable. While turning on the air conditioner is sometimes the best option, there may be other ways to cool down the house that don’t spike the electric bill. Take a look at these tips to get you through summer and into those cooler winds of fall.
Utilize the Fans in Your Home
Ceiling fans are much more than decoration or a nice addition to the look of the ceiling. While we definitely want these to look nice and go with the decor of the home, they’re actually meant to move air. When the air gets a little too warm and a little too still, use the fans in your home as intended. While it won’t turn a scorching day into a freezer, it can definitely drop the temperature a couple of degrees, which may be all it takes to keep the home feeling comfortable.
Open the Windows
Sometimes it feels hotter inside the home than out. Why? Because the inside of the home lacks a breeze. If it’s a hot day, but overall tolerable, cool off your home by simply opening the windows. This allows the breeze to blow through, which makes the still air inside move around, ultimately cooling off the temperature and lowering humidity.
Create Some Shade
The more direct sunlight streams into your home, the hotter it’s going to feel. When possible, create as much shade as you can. This can be done with trees (if you’re moving in or thinking of planting), by keeping the blinds closed, or even by using light curtains to block the direct light. Just a little bit of shade can make a big difference in the way that the home feels when you walk inside.
If you need the air conditioner, go ahead and turn it on. But if you’re looking to save a little on the electric bill or simply don’t need the power behind the a/c, use these tips to cool off the home just a bit with very little effort. Even a few degrees can make such a big difference in comfort level. Enjoy the warmth of summer without burning up by implementing these suggestions today.
