When we’re getting ready to buy a new house or build a new home, we start to dream big. And this can be a good thing! We want to make sure that everything we could possibly want is within this giant purchase we’re about to make. But considering the amount of money that goes into a new home, it’s also a time to be realistic and practical. While we want a Hollywood mansion, it’s possible that our budgets reciting the correct lines. To keep your expectations and the possibilities realistic, take a look at these three things you really don’t need in your new home.
The Most Expensive Tiles and Countertops
Especially if you’re building a house, it’s really tempting to get the best of the best. But the truth is that you probably don’t need the most expensive tile or the most expensive countertops on the market. Do you really need marble counters or self heating floors? Sure, we all want it! But if you’re trying to save money or simply being practical about your spending habits, this is an easy place to save.
More Than One Spare Bedroom
We all think that we need more space than we really do. But what are you going to do with more than one spare bedroom? Unless you have a specific idea in mind — an office, an at-home workout space, etc. — chances are good that you’ll simply fill it with junk. If you’re looking at buying a new home, there’s nothing wrong with having a guest bedroom, but more than one room, for most people, is nothing more than overkill.
Giant Bathrooms and Closets
This is another wish list item that most of us have, but it’s rarely a need. And it probably shouldn’t be a deal breaker. If you come across a home that has everything you’re looking for, but the closets or bathrooms are just a little smaller than you’d like, it might be an OK place to sacrifice. This doesn’t mean you should give up necessary space; it just means you should be willing to sacrifice a little bit of convenience if the price is right.
If you can find or afford a home with every tiny little thing that you could ever want, that’s awesome! Go for it! But if you’re on a budget and need to keep your desires within a certain realistic box, these areas are a great place to start. You may not need everything on your list, and these options may be some things that you can live without. Find the places where you’re willing to sacrifice just a little, and you’ll be living in the home of your dreams before you know it.
